Indoor Farming: A Guide

Indoor farming is also known as vertical farming and is the future of agriculture. Traditional farming techniques requires the farmer to grow plants in hectares of land and waits for some time to harvest their crops. The land is subjected to tests and will require different amounts and concentrations of fertilizer to maximize the growth and production potential of the planted crops. Added to the soil requirement is the protection of these crops from various diseases and pests. Pest control is very important in traditional farming because these pests can wreak havoc to the crops and undermine their production and growth, some can even wipe out hectares of well grown crops thus translating to thousands, if not millions of dollars in losses. Pest control comes at a price and is dangerous to the environment but they are necessary in the proper care of the crops. When rain water falls in these lands, pest control agents and fertilizers are carried to bodies of water where their ill effects are felt. Seas become laden with algae, fishes are dead in the water and may even harm humans. Read more great facts on general hydroponics, click here. Other creatures in the water are also killed and the ecosystem becomes disrupted that most marine animals tend to relocate themselves to other safer areas but some slow moving animals become entrenched in sediments of fertilizers thus suffocating them. It will take years for the affected marine ecosystem to become healthy again. Apart from the pests and fertilizers, farmers also must be wary of the weather, there are planting and harvesting seasons with some crops cannot be grown all year round. When these crops are hit hard by the changing weather, their growth maybe disrupted and cause them to have fewer produce when harvest comes. There are a lot of factors that must be considered in traditional farming that in the near future, these threats may overwhelm the industry and shut it down. The biggest threat are land conversion and climate change. There is however a new form of farming that is called hydroponics. This is also called vertical or indoor farming that uses artificial light for sunlight, water for land and liquid nutrient for fertilizers. This form of farming can be adapted inside of buildings and homes and are therefore protected from pests and the environment. Crops that are grown through this process maybe harvested all year round thereby ensuring sufficient quantity of safe and nutritious food for all.
